Boom to the City - Race Results 2013
The Boom to City race, powered by Guinness on Saturday, February 23, 2013 had an exciting twist for the only station prize offered this year. To win the station prize the paddlers needed to reach the station prize flag located under the Haulover Bridge and then turn their canoe back up river to enter the creek. Oceana / Guydis Canoes (Chris Guydis, Tyreek Thompson, and Euken Arnold) was the first canoe to reach the entrance of the creek and decided to grab the Male Category station prize of $75. The other station prize of $75 went to the mixed team Coast Guard Guardians made up of Glen Jones, Keyren Tzib, and Antonio Franzua. Two teams who earned ½ off their entrance fee into this year’s La Ruta Maya race for their station prize was the only Female entrants the UB Lady Black Jaguars (Jayda Guydis, Louise Rodriguez, and Shanice Ferguson). The other team was in the Pleasure category, Police Crime Fighters with paddlers Nery Waight, Tyrell Alvarez, and Jesus Linares. The Masters Station Prize was $50 and a case of Guinness and was won by Watt A Ting paddled by John Searle, Michael Searle, and Robert Bailey. $50 and a case of Full Throttle was awarded to The Sprouts (Wilberto, Kendrick, and Michael Daniels) in the Junior Category and Happy Cow (Alfred Lopez, Byron Cruz, and Armando Lopez) representing the Intramural Category. Nice job on the extra effort to all these teams. Conditions were a bit windy in the lower river and caused several canoes to flip over. In one of the most impressive showing of sportsmanship, Team NICH (Efrain and Felix Cruz and Oscar Cordon) turned around and paddled back up river to assist the Westrac Team of Henner and Irvin Cruz and Jerry Cante, until they were able to right their canoe and continue in the race. Several of the lead boats, Belize Bank with Daniel and Amado Cruz and Armin Lopez, along with Ziprider paddled by Jeremy and Jermaine Sanchez, and Jerry Rhaburn, also BTL Cobb’s Arm with Roberto and Andres Cabb, and Roy Cano, all came to a stop until all teams were back up right and paddling. Actions like this need to be acknowledged and rewarded. The NICH team will be awarded five extra points towards the Paddler of the Year award at the end of our season.
The Male Category was finished out with Chukka Thrillers (Mario Castillo, Miguel Cruz, and Elmer Garcia) coming in 10th place overall followed by Petro Paddlers (Arnoldo and Allen Lopez and Henry Martinez) sponsored by Belize Natural Energy. Team Fast Forward, Simon August, Steve Castillo, and Elvis Sutherland, came in with a time of 3:11:22. The Belize Coast Guard also sponsored Charles Francisco, Godfrey Alford, and Karl Borland in the canoe titled Redemption. Two other mixed teams, Lone Wait Bembeh with Salina Rico, Manuel Baldera, and Ellen McKamey were sponsored by the US Embassy and Pigs Might Fly (sponsored by Go Low Win Big/Seaboards) with Alex and Noriko Gamero, and Jose Lopez, finished in the 2nd and 3rd position. The Intramural category had The UB Jaguars (Hector Bejerano, Alfonso Lind, and George Ortega) finishing in second place. Sergio Lopez, Jimmy Valdez, and Adrian Williams in Wateva Boyz finished in third followed by We’re Better At Studying with Victor Valder, Falen Miles, and Gian Hernandez rounded out this category. The Grumpy Old Men (Jerry Wilken, Stanley Bailey, and Joe Seguro) finally squeezed out a win over their long time rival came in with a winning time of 3:07:54 in the Masters Category. The Boomers Team made up of Martin Gideon, Matthew Mask, and Jeffrey Seguro came in second place in the Juniors Category twenty five minutes ahead of the third place team of Hunter Boys (Ellis Metzgen, Dominique Alvarez, and Ray Nicholson. The Pleasure Category had five entrants into this category. Javier Guardado, Rudolph Gentle, and Timateo Vanegas in Print Belize finished in 2nd place with a time of 3:16:12. Another Coast Guard entry of Howard Cassasola, Arthur Garbutt, and Linden Rosas paddled Magic Carpet into third place. San Pedro Belize Express had Shawn Hyde, Rupert Smith, and Giovani Santos paddling in at a time of 3:35:30. “3 Hours Later”, sponsored by St. Johns College Junior College, had Carolee Chanona, Megan Martinez, and Nertavo Rancharan rounding out the Pleasure Category. All boats participating in this Boom to City Race made a great effort and came to the finish line with smiles on their faces. It’s nice to see our sponsor, Guinness, continue to help in making this one of our most prestigious races every year. Special thanks to The Belize Coast Guard Officers for doing our race officiating, and Juan Melendez for being our safety boat captain. |

11th Annual Boom to di City 2012 - Race Results
Powered By Guinness The annual Boom to The City Canoe Challenge got underway at 9:00am, Saturday, February 18th. The start in Boom, as usual, was organized chaos with the fast teams sprinting out toward Belize City, leaving the “not so fast” teamsbehind to battle amongst themselves in the turbulent waters created by 23 canoes all trying to get off the start line as quickly as they can. Team Belize Bank was the first to the Boom Bridge followed closely by NICH and the ZipRider team. Shortly after the Boom Bridge, the BTL team attempted to jump across to join the lead group but was unable to keep up the frantic pace necessary to run with the big boys. By the time the race entered into the Haulover Creek, ZipRider was in the lead with the Belize Bank team on their wake. Team NICH was close behind trying to hold on to leaders. The race continued on in Haulover Creek with ZipRider and Belize Bank riding each other’s wake all the way to the final sprint in front of the Riverside Tavern where ZipRider (2:36:02) edged out Belize Bank (2:36:07) by 5 seconds. NICH took third place with a time of 2:36:11 with BTL and the Belize Coast Guard following up at 4th and 5th. All In was the first team in the mixed division and placed 7th overall with a time of 2:45:31. Print Belize placed first in the Pleasure craft division and was 11th overall. Team Natius followed closely behind placing first in the Intramural division. Armando Lopez, 14 years old, of team Natius was the youngest paddler to participate in the race and received a special trophy for his efforts. Immediately behind behind them was Team Police who finished first in the Female division. The Masters division was won by Team Watt A Ting. The Belize Canoe Association would like to thank all canoe teams, support crews, team sponsors, and all the fans who came out to support the annual Boom To The City Canoe Challenge. We would especially like to thank the race sponsors, Guinness, as well as the Riverside Tavern who did an excellent job in helping to make the event a success. |
2011 |
The Guinness sponsored Boom to the City Reach for Excellence Canoe Challenge got underway promptly at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12. The start as usual was organized chaos as 29 canoes all jostled for position trying to be first around the first bend in the river.
Things soon settled down with 5 boats in the lead group. The defending Ruta Maya champs, Zip Rider, including Jerry Rhaburn, Efrain and Rudy Cruz, and the ever present Belize Bank team, Daniel, Irvin and Amado Cruz, set the pace, with Team NICH (Armin Lopez, Jimmy Valdez, and Oscar Cordon), Team CPBL (Chris Guydis, Leon Gillett and Sheldon Seguro), and Team Cobbs Arm/Happy Cow (Keiron, Roberto and Clayton Cabb), all vying for position on the wake of the leaders. Unfortunately, about 20 minutes into the race, CPBL had a minor lapse in concentration while drafting in the wake of the NICH team, and went over. This left four boats riding together all the way down to Manatee Lookout, where Zip Rider decided to pick up the pace. This move created another separation, with the Happy Cow team being unable to respond, and leaving only Zip Rider, Belize Bank and NICH heading down to the entrance to Haulover Creek. Zip Riders were the first to turn into Haulover Creek and attacked once again; this time separating themselves from Belize Bank and NICH. The last move was decisive, and Zip Riders (2:32:30) finished a full 2 minutes ahead of Belize Bank (2:34:31) with NICH (2:35:46) following up close behind. The racing going on behind the leaders was no less exciting, as the Happy Cow team was fourth (2:38:15), Agrotech team fifth (2:40:51) and CPBL sixth (2:42:16). Next across the line was the Koop Sheet Metal team of Andreas Cobb, Eric Cano and Francisca Pfaender who finished seventh overall and first in the Mixed division. Lost and Found, consisting of the Sanchez brothers, Justin and Eldon, and Janice Leslie, were 8th across the line and second in the Mixed category. The 9th place overall team was the Coast Guard Redemption team of Calvin and Lyndon Rojas along with David Ayala; and 10th overall was the St. Ignatius High School team (Sergio and Alfred Lopez and Byron Cruz) from Cayo who also took first place in the Intramural category. Second place in the Intramural category was the Baptist Blazers (Shawn Hyde, Brian Lopez and Rene Perez) from Belmopan. In the Pleasure division, due to incomplete registration forms, two teams, Westrac (2:48:54) consisting of Henner and Elmer Cruz and Jerry Canto, and the Police Crime Fighters (2:53:44) team consisting of Avelio Flores, Nerry Waight and Jerome Ingram, both had to forfeit first and third place honors even though they had a very good performance and finished 11th and 15th overall. Therefore, after a technical meeting it was decided that the Print Belize team of Rudolph Gentle, Jesus Cruz and Javier Guardado were 1st in the Pleasure division (2:50:03) and the Vista Auto Rental team of Luis Mairn, Ezekel Myvette and Allan Bainton, were second with a time of 3:22:54. The Female category was won by the Police team, Peace Makers (Jane Usher, Christine Jacobs, and Delia Hyde), who came in with a time of 3:03:40, out pacing the 2nd place Female team Pic N Mix, sponsored by BATSUB and consisting of Stacey Smithson, Rhiannon Cheak and Helen Goloea (3:31:44). The Dory division had one entrant and was won by the Family Boys (3:01:59) of Santa Familia. This team is sponsored by Reimer’s Feed Mill and team members are Rey Cano, Efrain Quewell and Braulio Zetina. The Grumpy Old Men (Jerry Wilkin, Joe Fuzy and Dennis Johnson) were unable to hold off their archrivals Johny Watt, Michael Searle and Paul Hyde, paddling their Chaa Creek built canoe, Watt-a-Ting. Despite being knocked over in the start, and taking 5-6 minutes to get back in the boat, the Watt A Ting team were able to chase and overtake the Grumpy Old Men, and finished 6 minutes 32 seconds ahead of the Grumpy Old Men, to take 1st place in the Masters division at 3:02:30. The Grumpy Old Men had to settle for second this time around (3:08:53). The prize giving and post race activities were a big success, and the Belize Canoe Association wishes to thank Bowen & Bowen and Guinness for sponsoring the race and doing a great job organizing the post race activities. The Belize Canoe Association would also like to thank BATSUB for being a big part of the race by entering numerous boats as well as taking care of the start/finish time keeping. Finally, the Belize Canoe Association would like to thank all team sponsors, paddlers and race fans. Thanks for making the event a big success! |
