UPSTREAM - HAULOVER TO BOOM
The Upstream Race was launched by the Belize Canoe Association at the recommendation of veteran paddler Jerry Rhaburn. Paddling upstream is a harder race since the entire race is paddling against a current. Members test their skills against other teams as they gear up for La Ruta Maya!

Belize Canoe Association Upstream Race 2018 - Race Report
On Sunday the 28th of January 2018 the Belize Canoe Association held its third race for the canoe season. The Haulover to Boom Upstream Race started at the Haulover Bridge in Belize City where twelve (12) teams – in five different categories- battled the strong current of the flooded waters to maintain the starting line. At 9:08 a.m., they were off, - braving the strong flowing water against their path, dodging the debris and racing against each other. As the waves from the rush of the start battered the canoes, the Young Vikings capsized and took an early dip in the chocolate river. Thanks to the courtesy of Team Print Belize/Wrobel & Co. who rendered assistance and the Safety Boat that was provided, they recovered quickly and were back in the race in no time. From very early in the race, male Team Koop Sheet Metal took the lead and maintained a steady pace toward the finish line at Black Orchid Resort in Boom. Finishing in a time of 2 hours 28 minutes and 03 seconds, Team Koop Sheet Metal bested the contenders of Team NICH, who after losing a paddler, had to settle for second in the MALE category with a time of 2 hours 35 minutes and 10 seconds. The third team to complete the race was Team Westrac/UES, who also finished first in the MIXED category in time of 2:41:00. Not long behind, team Print Belize would pull in for fourth place overall and first in the MASTERS category in 2:41:03, while the Young Vikings would make an incredible come back, finishing in 2:42:29 to round out the top 5 and capture first place in the JUNIOR Category. Some 2 ½ minutes later, team Guydis Canoes would pull in to claim second place and close out the Mixed Category with a time of 2:45:02. Following them, the first INTRAMURAL team from the University of Belize (UB) finished in seventh place overall with a time of 2:47:06. Third place Male would go to team Joseph & Taylor in 2:53:31, and fourth and fifth would go to teams Watt a Ting and Unbreakable, respectively. Team Back to My Roots took home second in the Junior Category in 3:02:30, while Team Grumpy Old Men would close off the race and finish in second in their category in 3:45:15. All in all, the UPSTREAM 2018 proved to be a real test, and if nothing else, definitely put some miles on the arms of those who dared to show up. No Female Team signed up for the challenge this year, but for those who did, they received their Medals and Cash Prizes of $150.00, $100.00 and $50.00 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. The Belize Canoe Association takes this opportunity to thank everyone who made this race possible. Despite the rains up to the day prior to the race, and some last minute changes to the finish line, the paddlers still came out to make the race go on. We must say a special thank you to the Belize Dry Cleaners, who lent their support at the last minute to ensure cash prizes could be met, and of course to Black Orchid Resort for allowing us to use the property. Finally, we would be remiss to not mention the amazing show of support of Sea Sports for providing the safety boat - together with fuel and driver - to accompany the race. Needless to say this donation could not have been afforded by the Association, and so we were tremendously appreciative. That concludes the 2nd race of the year, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the next race – the RF&G Up & Down Challenge in Cayo on February 10, 2018. |

Haulover Bridge to Boom 2012 - Race Results
Start of Haulover to Boom 2012 on Saturday, February 4th, 2012 turned out to be a beautiful day for paddling, proving weather forecasting is very unpredictable, for the second of its kind Haulover Bridge to Burrell Boom upstream race. The first was held in 2010 where Chris Guydis and the Sanchez brothers, were the first victors and set a record of 1:59:55. At just before 9:30am, eighteen canoes set out to try to beat this record, but the river conditions prove somewhat challenging with strong current going against them.
A little after 2hrs 15mins the first canoes were in sight, you could hear the crowd cheering on the three teams coming in neck to neck to neck to what appeared to seem was going to be a very close finish, the current on the last turn on the river before the finish line was a bit tricky and that’s where experience and skill came into play for Ziprider paddled by Jerry Rhuburn, Felix Cruz, Efrian Cruz coming it at 2:16:37 to take the win and first male. They out sprinted the Belize Bank Bulldogs paddled by Erwin, Amado and Daniel Cruz who had the settle for second place coming just three seconds after at 2:16:40. The NICH canoe paddled by Oscar Corden, Jimmy Valdez and Armin Lopez, followed closely behind by five seconds to take third position at 2:16:45.Taking fourth male was Westrac whose canoe had in the youngest paddler at thirteen, Carlos Linarez, assisted by Jerry Cante and Hener Cruz, their time 2:24:31.
The fifth overall and first mixed team at a time of 2:27:14 was Oceana, paddled by Chris Guydis, his daughter Jayda and Jamel Seguro which was finshed 19 seconds before the Coast Guard’s Redemption paddled by G. Alford, K. Borland and A. Garbutt whom had to take 6th overall and 5th male at 2:27:33. A few minutes after were the high schoolers, Alfred Lopez, Bayron Cruz and Armando Lopez in the Natius Canoe taking first Intramural/Juniors and seventh overall clocked in at 2:31:58. They were followed by Missile the second Mixed team comprised of Samuel Nicholas, Shermain Faber and Nalbert Seguro at a time of 2:35:39, they took eight position overall. Taking the ninth spot was Watt A Ting sponsored by Sea Sports Belize, paddled by Euken Arnold, Paul Hyde and John Searle, clocking 2:37:07. Johnny after being pressured to keep up the pace by Euken, expressed overwhelmed joy for coming in the top ten for a second time.

Caribbean Pride Canoe wins 1st Annual Haulover to Boom Race
Chris Guydis, Jermaine Sanchez and Justin Sanchez of the Caribbean Pride team proved they are ready for the annual Ruta Maya River Challenge which starts March 5 by winning the last of the preliminary races organized by the Belize Canoe Association, first ever Haulover to Burrell Boom race held on Saturday, February 20. Guydis and the Sanchez boys from Flowers Bank paddled the Caribbean Pride canoe, sponsored by Citrus Products of Belize Limited, from the Haulover Bridge 12 miles against the current past the Burrell Boom bridge to the tourism village beside the Black Orchid Resort in one hour 59 minutes and 55 seconds to win first place in the elite men’s division. The Cruise Solutions team had to set midshipman Henner Cruz ashore, but his teammates Jerry Rhaburn and Efrain Cruz still had the muscle to out-paddle the six-time Ruta Maya champs Daniel Cruz and Amado Lopez in Belize Bank canoe to win the sprint for second place in two hours three minutes and 18 seconds. Cruz and Lopez were without Texas Water Safari veteran Armin Lopez, but their new teammate Erwin Cruz helped them finish a second later to claim third prize.
